CoLP End of Year Function 2013

The Community of Learning Principals (CoLP) ended 2013 off with fun and festivities on Thursday, 28 November 2013. On arrival, attendees were treated to a performance by a group from eMzantsi Carnival. The dancing and clapping that accompanied the catchy tunes played by the drummers kicked the event off on a high note.

The opening speaker, Dr Mashiyi, who is a faculty member of the University of the Western Cape, highlighted the plight of education in South Africa and the importance of empowering Principals to lead their schools effectively.

Barbara Nussbaum, the Keynote Speaker on the evening, is a Creative Arts Therapist and she presented the topic, “The Art of Leadership through Music”.  The presentation was very interactive and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.

Attendees were requested to submit a song that best describes their leadership style beforehand. During the presentation they had the opportunity to share their song and their reasons for choosing it with the audience. The audience was invited by Barbara to share their thoughts on the song and how they think it reflects the personality of the person that chose it. The presentation offered a fresh and fun look at leadership.

Other speakers included Yandiswa Mazwana, from eMzantsi Carnival, who provided a brief overview of what eMzantsi Carnival does.  eMzantsi Carnival is an NGO that recycles plastic, containers and the like and turn it into instruments, ornaments and even mirror frames. This initiative has garnered quite a bit of international attention; Yandiswa quipped that she had visited many countries, “all because of junk!”

Two Principals; Ronald Coraizin, Principal of Hillside Primary School and Gerry Hendricks, Principal of St John’s Primary School, spoke positively of the role that CoLP has played in their leadership journey and their appreciation of these events.

After the event, guests were treated to lovely catering and had the opportunity to network.
