We are excited to confirm that Sophakama Primary was selected as one of only 8 schools in the Western Cape to participate in a new program recently launched by the Premier’s office.

Sophakama Primary School Sophakama sings in sounds of Africa

The Sophakama Primary School choir was singing a new tune on Friday 19 February in a special handover ceremony as they were gifted with a piano from Callie Lewis of Books and Beyond and her family.

This generous donation was the prized possession of Callie’s late mother Barbara Lewis, who was just as passionate about education as she was about music. A plaque was mounted on the piano in her honor to carry forward her legacy in bringing joy to children through the power of music.

The event was attended by by Callie’s dad David Hibling, husband Dale, Tracey and Darryl Faquhar, Oupa Ockie and a team of Roggerz including proud Sophakama parents and members of the community. With an instrument to hold their voices together, the choir, also known as “The Face of Sophakama” entertained the audience in African song and dance.

Sophakama Primary School Simbulele's story

Simbulele Mgengo was born in 2002 in the Eastern Cape in a village of Mhlopekazi.

At the age of 2 she lost her mom and her father was forced to relocate to the Western Cape, making the Dunoon Township their new home. True to Simbulele’s character, she embraced what life brought her way and made the most of every opportunity. She excelled in her school work and established herself as a top performer. She combined this with great friendships amongst her peers and it came as no surprise in 2014 when she was elected as Head girl of Sophakama Primary.

Sophakama Primary School Sophakama Strategising for Success

Following the success of the Teambuilding workshop that the teachers of Sophakama Primary School attended, they recently had two Strategic Planning Sessions. The sessions were again facilitated by Louise Hendey and the attendees were very enthusiastic!

One of the Rogz team members wrote the following report:

“Following our recent Teambuilding event with the Sophakama staff on 22 Feb, we were very pleased to be able to dedicate two afternoons to get together again as an entire team and continue to build on this positive momentum.
The objective of these two sessions were to identify and prioritize all issues needing attention and then to select the key projects that we are able to tackle at this point in time.
We were fortunate to have Louise Hendey join us again to facilitate the two sessions – aiding the team both with out of the box thinking as well as keeping on track towards an ultimate plan.
