Collaboration makes rands – and sense: Ceres school learners to gain financial literacy skills

Citizen Leader Lab is delighted to host Xhuma, a financial literacy project run by International Masters’ students from the Swiss-based University of St Gallen.

Over the next few days, the ‘Xhumites’, will deliver fun, interactive finance workshops to learners at Iingcinga Zethu Secondary School in Nduli, Ceres. Iingcinga is one of over 1,700 schools part of Citizen Leader Lab’s flagship leadership development programme, Partners for Possibility.

Since 2012, Xhuma has improved the lives of children in South Africa by teaching them financial literacy skills. During the Xhuma workshops, Iingcinga learners will be taught the fundamentals of financial literacy through an interactive, entertaining but impactful ‘Money Game’.

This game introduces several concepts of financial literacy, such as income, expenses, investments, saving and spending money on ‘fun stuff’. Its goal is to create consciousness and awareness around financial matters in an interactive way that encourages the participants to be proactive.

Grade 11 learners will also participate in a mentoring programme set up in partnership with the University of Cape Town’s Investment Society.
