Leading People Development Organisations Celebrate Women’s Month with Empowering Event

In a show of solidarity during Women’s Month, three of South Africa’s prominent people development organisations came together on 1 August to host an empowering event that showcased the journeys of women towards passion and purpose. The collaborative effort between Citizen Leader Lab, the GIBS Alumni Speakers’ Network and the Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology of South Africa (SIOPSA) highlighted the achievements of women in leadership roles and created a platform for their voices to be heard.

The event took place at the GIBS Business School in Illovo, Johannesburg, against the backdrop of the historical events of 9 August 1956 – a pivotal moment in South African history. On that day, thousands of women from all walks of life marched to the Union Buildings in Tshwane to protest against the discriminatory pass laws.

Attracting a diverse audience eager to engage with the stories and experiences shared by the speakers, this unique gathering amplified the narratives of women who have broken glass ceilings and overcome obstacles to reach their career pinnacles.

Moderated by Jorja Wilkins, Chairperson of the GIBS Alumni Speakers’ Network, the event featured a distinguished panel consisting of prominent women leaders:

  • Komala Pillay, CEO of Citizen Leader Lab
  • Sharon Munyaka, President of SIOPSA
  • Celia Collins, VP of Publicis Media
  • Ntombikayise Nkosi, Lecturer at UNISA

The panellists shared their personal journeys, highlighting challenges, triumphs and insights gained along the way. Their experiences offered a glimpse into the evolving landscape of women’s leadership and the strides being made across various sectors.

This collaboration not only celebrated achievements, but it also created an authentic experience that underscored the shared commitment of these organisations to continue to provide platforms where women are empowered to embrace their potential as leaders.

Panellist and CEO of Citizen Leader Lab, Komala Pillay, said: ‘’Thank you to GIBS for hosting this remarkable experience. The insightful narratives shared by the panel and the stories conveyed were truly inspiring and have left an indelible impression.’’

Also in attendance was Citizen Leader Lab’s Inland Regional Manager, Audrey Jones.

“This collaborative event not only highlighted the accomplishments of amazing women, but it also reminded us that embracing diverse narratives is how we shape a stronger world,” Jones mentioned.
