Execs Back to School 2020: Save the date!

Symphonia for South Africa is excited to announce the official dates for its third annual Execs Back to School days in Johannesburg, Cape Town and, for the first time, in Stellenbosch.

Proudly sponsored by black-owned investment holding company, Sphere, for a third year, Execs Back to School facilitates an important cross-sectoral approach to addressing the challenges in South Africa’s education system. Business leaders are given the opportunity to engage with their counterparts in education to gain important insights into the challenges that are faced by principals in South Africa’s under-resourced schools. It is also a novel way to support Symphonia for SA’s work in improving education, and to learn more about its internationally-acclaimed Partners for Possibility leadership and education development programme.

In 2019, CEOs and top executives from some of South Africa’s most prominent companies participated in the Execs Back to School initiative in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Participants were unanimous in their praise for the initiative and for the new perspectives they gained.

Much-loved footballing legend and role model, Lucas Radebe, spent the morning at Soweto’s Nomzamo Madikizela Mandela Primary School. His participation helped him realise that supporting education should be a national imperative.  He commented that: “Schools are the centre of our communities and are an essential building block for the nation’s future. Effective schools equip the next generation with the values, skills and education they need to fulfil their individual potential at work and as active citizens contributing to sustainable communities.”

Sam Roy, Smile 90.4 presenter visited Wesley Methodist Preparatory School in Salt River, Cape Town. Principal Andre Engel shared the impact it had on him: ‘’It was refreshing having someone who didn’t come into school ‘knowing better’. Just to connect with Sam has given me a bit more energy. We [principals] don’t always realise what we’re doing right until we have someone to talk to about it.’’ He added that: ‘’Our children need visual representations of what they can become one day. Every business leader that walks into our school is a potential role model for our kids.’’

We invite you to join a growing cohort of business leaders who have been enriched by the Execs Back to School experience and look forward to your participation. Please feel free to share this opportunity or let us know if you would like to nominate colleagues or friends to attend an Execs Back to School event.
