Polokwane PfPs participate in Community Building workshop

PfP’s very first Polokwane leadership circle recently attended a two-day Community Building workshop as part of the formal coursework component of their year-long PfP journey.

 A visibly excited Marietjie du Toit, Learning Process Facilitator for the leadership circle, explained that this gathering was unique in many ways.

“What made this training so unique and successful was the fact that the six participating schools were able to invite representatives of their school management team (SMT), as well as their school governing body (SBG) to the workshop – something that has never happened before. This was all made possible courtesy of Sanlam, Limpopo, which generously sponsored 20 SMT and SGB members in addition to the 12 principals and business leaders on the PfP programme.”

The structured two-day experience was facilitated by Community Building facilitator, Justin Foxton, who unpacked Peter Block’s Six Conversations of Community. This programme focused on bringing together a variety of people who are committed to building stronger communities, in both corporate and social life.

During the course, the PfPs learned how to use the power of small groups and creative, effective questions to build communities that are inclusive, engaged and supportive, and in which every individual has a sense of purpose and value.

For Principal Shapule Modjadji of Makgongoana High, a school situated between the University of Limpopo and the Zionist Christian Church in Moria, imparting the key principles and skills she gained to the rest of her SMT was a priority.

“Immediately after attending the Community Building Workshop, Mrs Letsoalo and Mrs Molaba of my school’s SMT and I gave a mini workshop to the rest of the SMT. From there, it was interesting to observe that all members of the SMT reflected on their responsibilities and were able to see their strengths and weaknesses.

“The SMT is now cohesive because it can sit together to share challenges and good practices in various departments. I can say with confidence that my school is running more efficiently because of this workshop,” says Principal Modjadji.

Simon Sebake, Principal of Motse Maria Girls’ School, located an old Catholic missionary-property near the village of Doringspruit, Ga-Mashashane, described a similar enlightening experience.

He found the intense but rewarding training conducive to relationship building – a much spoken about benefit of the workshop that has helped close the relationship gap between his school’s SMT and SGB. He observed a noticeable change for the better in the way these stakeholders interacted during and after training.

According to the Learning Process Facilitator, Marietjie du Toit, the personal and professional growth of the participants within the two days was nothing short of remarkable. In closing, participants felt so strongly about building their respective communities through the moulding of problems into possibilities, that they pledged their full commitment towards creating schools free of the widespread scourge of drugs, teenage pregnancies and pervasive violence.
