Soweto school receives new computer lab

Learners of Rutegang Primary are the deserving recipients of a brand new, state-of-the-art computer laboratory – a first for the ordinary school located in Jabavu, Soweto.

The laboratory, fully equipped with state-of –the-art computers, accessories and software, was made possible thanks to funds raised during this year’s Hot 91.9 / Sage Foundation Hot Legs Run, the involvement of education through technology innovators, the Click foundation, and PfP business leader, Cheryl Mulder.

An excited Roly Boardman, business leader partner to Principal of Rutegang Primary, Phumele Mthiyana, proudly relayed the news to PfP of how the laboratory came to be. “It was, of course, the Sage Foundation’s Hot Legs Run, the Click Foundation and Cheryl Mulder who made the opening of the new computer lab a reality. Thank you! “What a day we had at the Hot Legs Run, with the staff of Rutegang Primary and a group of learners completing a lap of honour. I’m sure it’s a day they’ll never forget!” he added.

Billed as a pre-event for the gruelling Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, this inaugural Hot Legs Run offered three routes: 5 km, 15 km and 32 km, with R50 from each participant’s entry fee being donated to PfP. In total, a whopping R159 750 for Partners for Possibility was raised on the day.

Sage has been an avid supporter of PfP since 2013, and its foundation is a vibrant funder and supporter of social enterprises. The globally renowned supporter of sustainable social, economic and entrepreneurial opportunities in local communities has previously collaborated with PfP to deliver much needed stationery supplies to PfP schools at the start of the 2018 academic year.

Boardman and Mthiyana completed the PfP leadership development journey as part of the JHB26 Leadership Circle, under the guidance of Learning Process Facilitator, Chantel Dawtry.

Mthiyana has described the experience as eye-opening, saying that her school now operates “like a well-oiled machine” because she has been able to gain vital leadership skills, such as the art of effective delegation, from Boardman.

It has been shown that technology, if implemented properly, can produce significant gains in student achievement outcomes and ultimately trigger the paradigm shift sorely needed in education. It is hoped that the young minds attending Rutegang Primary will now enjoy an enhanced learning experience through access to the vast world of technology.
