The 6 facets of Partners for Possibility

Partners for Possibility (PfP) is like no other initiative in South Africa. More than a successful education intervention, PfP is a movement that has the power to change the very structure of South African society.

Our programme is designed to facilitate the following processes simultaneously:


PfP strengthens our society as whole through the cultivation of relationships across cultural, racial, gender and language boundaries. Through partnership across traditional boundaries, PfP brings citizens together to achieve a common purpose – and this contributes towards the construction of our national identity.

Reducing inequality in education

South Africa is one of the most unequal and unjust countries in the world. By reducing the inequalities in our education system, PfP gives our children a fair shot at becoming economically productive adults.

Leadership development

PfP, in alignment with the most cutting edge thinking on leadership development, is designed to develop next generation leaders who are conscious, compassionate and who understand that business can be a force for good.

Active Citizenship

An opportunity for ordinary citizens to contribute to a more just and equitable society. By addressing our country’s education challenges together, a culture of active citizenship becomes ingrained in ordinary South Africans. We envision what could be achieved if all those who possess the impetus to create a better society apply their knowledge and skills in a coordinated manner.

Principal support and leadership capacity building in schools

The key differentiating factor between successful and unsuccessful schools is leadership of the school principal. However, many of South Africa’s principals have not had the opportunity to participate in high quality leadership development processes. PfP focuses on building our principals’ leadership capacity which subsequently leads to improved education outcomes for learners.

Cross-sectoral collaboration between business, government and civil society

PfP acknowledges that the challenges in education will not be resolved by the education sector alone. This is why we are committed to facilitating effective collaborations across sectors.


PfP engages business leaders and school principals and develops their leadership skills in co-learning and co-action partnerships.

The programme is a carefully designed, 12-month leadership development programme in which much of the learning and development takes place while business leaders and school principals work together in partnership to address challenges in schools.

Both partners attend leadership training courses and facilitated sessions with other principals and business leaders. Through this process, principals are empowered to embed their schools at the centre of their communities and to improve the quality of education being offered to our youth. Business leaders develop their leadership ability through hands-on experience in an environment different from their day-to-day working life.

While many principals have been outstanding educators and perhaps have inherent leadership potential, most have not been equipped with the skills they need to fulfil a leadership role that is critically important and extremely challenging. Meeting this need for skills development is a mammoth task, but it is not insurmountable if the private sector offers its expertise and support. Without skilled leadership, schools cannot provide the quality of education that gives young South Africans the opportunity to become productive members of society.
